The Caldwell catalogue lists it as number 44, and it measures 4.0 arcminutes by 3.1. In the photo, its thin, straight bar crosses the centre at a slant, and an arm springing from one of its ends curls into an arc, in a paler halo. Amateur astronomers sometimes nickname it the Propeller Galaxy, for the look of its arms.
