Charles Messier discovered it in 1773; it gathers some ten billion stars into a smooth whole, almost without structure, like elliptical galaxies in general. In the photo, it is alone at the centre: a pinkish oval with a brighter core, and in the bottom right-hand corner, a russet glow that is the edge of the disc of the Andromeda Galaxy. It appears again, smaller, in the wide field of this catalogue's photos of the Andromeda Galaxy.
