Galaxy · Cetus
A weakly barred spiral galaxy in Cetus, discovered by William Herschel in 1784, about 11.8 million light-years away.
Le Cœur et l'Âme · Photograph by the author · 3h 47m of exposure, DwarfLab DWARF 3
Very elongated, it spans 19.2 arcminutes by 5.5, nearly two thirds of the diameter of the full Moon. Its surface brightness is low, 14.16 magnitudes per square arcminute: its light, spread out, stands out poorly from the sky background. In the photo, its mottled disc rises almost straight up the middle of the frame and breaks up into pale knots towards the north; the bright star sitting on its southern tip is of magnitude 9.5.
