Cluster · Auriga
M38
An open cluster in Auriga, about 3,480 light-years away, 290 million years old, nearly ten times the age of M36.
Le Cœur et l'Âme · Photograph by the author · 3h 47m of exposure, DwarfLab DWARF 3
Like M36, it was spotted by Giovanni Battista Hodierna before 1654, then catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764. It spans 15 arcminutes: in the photo, its bluish and orange stars scatter over a large part of the centre, with no clear core. Its neighbour in the sky, NGC 1907, stays just outside the frame, to the south.
